The inaugural C.A.R.E. Celebrity Golf Tournament took place April 14, 2008 at Laurel Oak Country Club in Sarasota. A star-studded, celebrity cast showed up to help support the C.A.R.E. Diagnostic Evaluation Center and raise autism awareness in our community. The event was a tremendous success thanks to all of the supportive sponsors, celebrities, and participants that took part. More than $120,000 was raised to help local families dealing with autism related disorders. Michael’s on East donated a spectacular pairing’s party the night before the tournament. Guests were treated to a fabulous array of fine food and spirits that set a festive tone for the entire two-day event. The golf tournament took center stage the following morning as more than 30 teams set out to compete in a five-man scramble format. Sports stars such as Carlton Fisk, Fred McGriff, Bobby Bonilla, David Wells, Joe Magrane, Chad Bratzke, Tom Nutten, Jim Perry, Wayne Garrett, Jack “Goose” Givens, Kevin House, Scot Brantley, Doug Creek, Jeff Reboulet, Paige Dunlap, Mike Heath, Rodney McCray, John and Wayne Fontes, and Tom Neidenfuer, Jeff D’Amico, Mark Guthrie, and David Wesley filled the field. Not to be outdone, entertainment celebrities the likes of Dickie Betts, Todd Kalas, Bob Harrigan, Leo Dufour, Les McCurdy, Greg Billings, Kevin Neghandi, Chris Campbell, J.P. Guarneri, and Joe Mercurio also tested their mettle on the links. Bob Harrigan’s team took the first ever title and all the bragging rights. The C.A.R.E. auction took place after the post-golf dinner and proved to be an exhilarating and heart-warming way to cap off the event. Dr. Kirstina Ordetx created a touching slide show to promote awareness and the great Dickie Betts entertained the audience with an incredible guitar session worthy of his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame status. Many local businesses rolled up their sleeves in support of C.A.R.E. in its inaugural celebrity outing. Jason and Lorrie Isringhausen (St. Louis Cardinals) served as the Albatross sponsor. S & S Motorsports, Mr. And Mrs. Dennis Dirks, and Michael’s on East generously served as Eagle sponsors. C.A.R.E. would like to thank all of the wonderful people in our community for their support in helping to prevent autism from becoming “par for the course”. |
